You Don't Need the Whole Map

You don’t have to keep walking a path simply because it’s the one you started on. Sometimes finding your way means trusting yourself enough to choose differently.

Last week we talked about direction — about knowing how you want to feel, even without knowing exactly where you’ll land.

This week, I want to talk about the path itself.

Because once you start moving toward something, a new fear tends to show up:

What if I choose the wrong path?

What if the way forward doesn’t look the way I imagined? What if moving more slowly means I’m falling behind? What if I learn something along the way that changes where I want to go?

Here’s what I want you to know:

Taking a different path doesn’t mean the first one was wrong.

Moving slowly doesn’t mean you’re behind.

And changing your mind isn’t quitting... sometimes it’s the most honest thing you’ll do all year.

Sometimes the path you chose was right for who you were when you chose it.

You made the best decision you could with what you knew then. You followed what made sense. You walked far enough to learn things you couldn’t have known from where you started.

And sometimes walking that path is exactly how you discover that you’re ready for something different.

You’re allowed to choose a different path.

Maybe you learned something new about yourself along the way.

Maybe what once felt right doesn’t anymore.

Maybe something happened that you couldn’t have planned for...a diagnosis, a layoff, a season of exhaustion, and the path you expected to take simply isn’t available anymore.

Or maybe nothing dramatic happened at all.

Maybe you just changed.

None of that erases the distance you’ve already covered.

None of it makes the time you spent on that path wasted.

It brought you here.

I think sometimes we stay on a path simply because we’ve already spent so much time walking it. We convince ourselves that changing direction would somehow invalidate everything that came before.

But what if everything that came before is exactly what gave you the perspective to choose differently now?

You are not required to keep making the same choice simply because an earlier version of you made it.

You’re allowed to look at where you are, look at what you know now, and choose again.

There’s no map detailed enough to show you every version of the life ahead of you.

And not being able to see around the bend doesn’t mean there isn’t a path ahead.

It simply means you can’t see it yet.

You don’t need the whole map.

You need the next step.

And enough trust in yourself to take it.

Maybe finding your way home was never about knowing every turn before you began.

Maybe you find your way by walking it.

A few questions to sit with:

Where in your life are you staying on a path simply because it’s the one you started on?

What might become possible if you gave yourself permission to choose differently?
