Who’s on Your Journey?

Not everyone who joins us is meant to travel the whole way. Some stay for years, some for a season, and some for only a moment, but that doesn’t make what they brought into our lives matter any less.

Warm golden-hour image of a quiet countryside train platform with several distant people walking or waiting near a small train, evoking shared journeys and passing chapters.

Not everyone who joins us is meant to travel the whole way.

I think sometimes we forget that.

We measure relationships by how long they lasted. We look at the people who are no longer beside us and wonder what happened, what changed, or whether something went wrong.

But maybe length was never the only measure of what mattered.

Some people are with us for the long haul...the ones who packed a bag of their own and said, I'm coming too. They know different versions of us. They've been there for unexpected detours, long stretches of road, wrong turns, beautiful views and the moments when we weren't entirely sure where we were going.

Those people are rare.

Hold onto them. Tell them what they mean to you. Thank them while they're still sitting beside you.

But other people join us for a season.

A few miles.

Sometimes only a single stop.

They sit beside us for a while and then, somewhere along the way, our paths separate.

That doesn't necessarily make the relationship a failure. It doesn't erase what was shared. And it doesn't mean their presence mattered any less.

Maybe they weren't there for the whole story.

Maybe they were there for exactly the page you needed them on.

Some people come into our lives and teach us something we carry forward. Some help us through a stretch of road we couldn't quite navigate alone. Some remind us who we are when we've forgotten. Some make us laugh when everything has felt far too serious.

And some people may never know they mattered at all.

A stranger who was unexpectedly kind on a hard day.

Someone who said exactly what you needed to hear without realizing you needed to hear it.

A person who believed in you before you quite believed in yourself.

A conversation that lasted ten minutes but somehow stayed with you for ten years.

I've always loved those moments.

Maybe that's part of why I keep a gratitude jar.

The big things go in it, of course. But so do the things that would be incredibly easy to miss.

A kindness.

A conversation.

Someone showing up.

Someone making a difficult day a little lighter.

A moment when I stopped long enough to notice that, even if only for that stretch of the road, I wasn't traveling alone.

On harder days, I've reached into that jar and found reminders of people and moments I had almost forgotten. And every time, I'm reminded that gratitude isn't only about who stayed the longest.

It's about noticing what someone brought with them while they were here.

A lesson.

A laugh.

Encouragement.

Perspective.

A memory.

Sometimes even a little more courage for whatever came next.

And maybe that's something worth noticing as we think about the people on our own journeys.

Who is walking beside you now?

Who walked with you once?

Who helped you carry something when it was heavy?

Who handed you something beautiful without even knowing it?

Because some of what's in your bag isn't weight at all.

Some of it is a gift someone left there along the way.

So today, maybe think of just one person from one stop on your journey.

Maybe they're still beside you.

Maybe your paths separated years ago.

Maybe they have no idea you still remember them.

If you were standing in front of your gratitude jar right now, with one small piece of paper in your hand, what would you write on the note you'd drop in for them?
