The Beauty of Letting Go

Like the trees in autumn, we can celebrate the beauty of everything we've experienced, honor what has served us, and find the strength to let go when we're ready.

The Beauty of Letting Go

The beauty of fall just hits different for me. It’s a season full of changes that I feel through all my senses.

The smell of fireplaces, wet leaves, and that crisp air.

The sound of leaves under your feet as you walk through them.

The taste of pumpkin spice everything…I had to throw that one in.

But the landscape changes, too. Green leaves slowly turn to yellow, then orange, then red, and brown before they fall to the ground. It’s amazing to see how different the same landscape can look week by week.

The trees themselves are strong. They’ve produced branches full of beautiful leaves through spring and summer. And now, in autumn, they look like they’re celebrating in vibrant color, before letting go.

It got me thinking lately: autumn is nature’s way of preparing for the solace and quiet of winter, a time for introspection and rest.

What if we took time to celebrate the things that served us, recognize the things that no longer do, and give ourselves permission to let go of both? After all, something can serve us beautifully in one season and still not belong in the next.

What if each of the things we hold on to is like a leaf on a tree?

I hear so often from people who feel stuck, who hold on to the things that might just be holding them back.

Perfection puts undue and unnecessary pressure on us. Needing to prove ourselves. Wanting to be accepted or liked. The need to be right, keeping disputes going for long periods of time. Telling ourselves we can't do something without ever questioning whether that's true. People who may not be good for our souls, because they’re familiar.

Holding on to the things others have told us along the way and truly believing them.

So many of the beliefs we carry about ourselves were formed long before we knew to question them. Sometimes we continue carrying those beliefs without realizing they’re no longer true.

Think about that for a second. How often do we live our lives on autopilot, believing things about ourselves that we’ve never stopped to question?

What if we had the ability to make some changes, to undo some of those auto-beliefs?

What if, instead of repeating old beliefs, we celebrated every step we took along the way and saw them as leaves on a tree, changing colors?

The beauty of autumn is that the leaves change colors before letting go.

The beauty in you is celebrating yourself, letting your leaves show before letting them go. Every step you took brought you to the next place in life, and that is beautiful.

Perhaps this is your season to celebrate how far you’ve come before deciding what you’re ready to release.

It’s funny: when you see your own strength and beauty and start celebrating you, you make space for the negative beliefs to fall from the tree.

Celebrate yourself a little. Then, when you’re ready, the next step can be letting go of one limiting thought or belief. After that, take some time to rest and celebrate a little more.

And when spring arrives, that same strong tree, having stood quietly through winter, will reveal its beauty once again through fresh green leaves, blossoms, and new growth.

Letting go doesn’t mean losing who we are. Sometimes it simply makes room for us to bloom again.

I’m there with you. I’ve felt stuck, and I’m noticing which of my leaves are ready to go.

I don’t have the next season figured out yet, but I don’t need to.

For now, it’s enough to honor the strength that’s brought me this far and make space for what’s next.
